Seven Sister's Bridges
There are nine bridges on the Stann Creek Valley Road from Middlesex to Dangriga. The string of bridges in the upper Stann Creek Valley are called the Seven Sisters Bridges, as once there were seven (7) of these narrow bridges in close proximity on the seven-mile stretch of road between Alta Vista and Valley Community. There are now only 5 of these old bridges originally built for trains still in use. The bridges are one-lane crossing and force travelers to slow down to marvel at the beautiful scenery of this area.
The first of the Seven Sisters Bridges is at mile 14 and is called the Awe Bridge by locals. Two are at the entrance and exit of Steadfast Village at mile 16. One is near to the Weller House and another is at the entrance of Valley Community. One was at mile 20 in front of the Ritchie's residence and one was at mile 21 and a half on the curve to Middlesex for a total of seven. These bridges were built over a century ago and the distinctive trestle design can be seen on their foundation.
There were an additional 2 narrow bridges in the valley area, one at Pomona near Valley Gospel Chapel and one at Hope Creek near the ever famous White Swan. Some of the bridges were replaced in the mid-1990's during the reconstruction of the Hummingbird Highway but sadly were bombed down at the turn of the millennium by training British troops. The rest of the bridges are currently being replaced as you read this article. After this year only pictures will remain of these land marks that make travelling the North Stann Creek Valley a truly unique experience.
